Guarda: The Cradle of Wines from the Cold

Start your visit in Guarda, Portugal's highest city.

Start your visit in Guarda, Portugal's highest city. Here you'll feel the true mountain air as you walk through the medieval streets, where the granite lends the city its nobility.
We suggest a visit to the cathedral, a former library of Gothic architecture, and a stroll through the streets of the city.

Soak up the historical and cultural atmosphere on one of the terraces in the old town square. Then climb up to the Castle Keep to enjoy the view over the city and Serra da Estrela.
Stop for a meal in one of the many local restaurants and sample the local cuisine. Don't miss grain broth, chestnut soup or bacalhau à Conde da Guarda.

End your day with a mandatory stop at the Solar do Vinho da Beira Interior, next to the Guarda Wall and the Cathedral. Here you can buy local wines and learn more about the characteristics and uniqueness of our nectars.

Take the opportunity to rest in one of the city's accommodation centres, as you'll need a lot of energy on the second day!
Day 2: 20 kilometres away from Guarda is Videmonte, a small mountain village that's the starting point for the country's most beautiful trails: the Passadiços do Mondego. They are part of Serra da Estrela's Natural Park, as well as Estrela UNESCO World's Geopark.

Dedicate this day to nature. We recommend one of the available routes, which makes use of 5 kilometres of existing paths and covers an area of 7 kilometres of crossings, footbridges and suspension bridges, with breathtaking landscapes and a wide variety of footpaths, dams, waterfalls, levadas and mills.

Don't go home without discovering the city's handicrafts, especially the famous "Papa Blankets".
