Beira Interior Wine Villages

Explore the wine regions of Beiras and Serra da Estrela and Beira Baixa, where wine, heritage and gastronomy combine with a landscape of singular beauty.

Beira Interior Wine Region

Beira Interior is characterised by its heterogeneity, where imposing mountain ranges such as Estrela, Gardunha, Marofa and Malcata take turns with plains as far as the eye can see.  The soils favourable to growing vines are mostly granite, with important patches of schist and quartz veins.

The altitude marks the identity of its wines, with vineyards planted between 300 and 750 metres. Its harsh climate, with hot, dry summers and very cold, harsh winters, marks the identity of wines made with typical grape varieties: Síria, Fonte Cal and Arinto for the whites, and Rufete, Marufo, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional for the reds.

The region is also known for having more than 1,000 hectares of organically grown vineyards due to the unique natural conditions for this type of agriculture.

The Beira Interior region is also characterised by its rivers, in particular the Côa, Zêzere and Mondego, which are embraced by the Douro and Tejo to the north and south of the region respectively.  The Mondego Walkways allow us to get to know and enjoy this river and its tributaries, which cross the rugged Beira Interior.

The biodiversity of the fauna and flora, the relics of industrial archaeology and the beautiful natural landscapes reveal jewels of nature and human ingenuity of singular beauty.

The unique beauty of the Historic Villages, the Mountain Villages and the Schist Villages are areas of preserved history, tradition, heritage and people who convince us from the inside with their truth.
